Simon Carden's second goal in three days led the reds on their way to an 11th straight win - even though a tense finish meant they had to work until the dying moments.
In what was United's toughest test of the season against a physical Curzon side - before 1,683 spectators, the visitors took the lead on 38 minutes when Josh Howard hit a corner from the left and forward Stuart Rudd made contact, knocking the ball onto the bar.
The ball rebounded and Carden was there to finish for 1-0.
And FC kept up the momentum after the break, scoring their second goal of the night on 51 minutes.
Again it was Howard involved. The winger came in from the right wing and pushed it behind the back four, only for Curzon Ashton defender Andrew Watson to put into his own goal.
But the match took a controversial turn with about 20 minutes remaining when midfielder Will Ahern retaliated to a fierce tackle. Ahern was duly given a straight red, making it a tense last few minutes for United.
The home side clawed themselves back into the game with nine minutes to go in controversial style.
Striker Michael Morton was accused of bringing the ball under control with his hand before finishing. But the referee let the goal stand for 2-1. The goal was Norton's 17th of the season.
But Rudd came to United's rescue, bagging his 13th goal of the season when a goalmouth scramble broke to him in the 88th minute.
The former Skelmersdale man was able to charge down a clearance from Curzon Ashton's 'keeper before finishing from the edige ofthe 18-yard box and watching the ball sneak into the right-hand post.
The win puts FC nine points clear of second-placed Maine Road, who play Ramsbottom United on Tuesday.
